Protocol for stress ulcer prophylaxis in ICU patients. The upper panel shows the recommended procedure according to risk factors for stress ulcer prophylaxis. In patients with one or more of the listed factors, medication was considered according to the flowchart. A patient with risk factors 1 or 2 almost always received medication. When it was not possible to administer a particular agent or a patient’s condition had changed, including the possibility of oral administration, another agent was administered according to the flowchart. Recommended adjustments to the dosage of famotidine according to renal function are shown in the lower panel.
